Kendall SCD™ Sequential Compression System

Advanced Intermittent Pneumatic Compression with Vascular Refill Detection

The Kendall SCD™ Sequential Compression System from Cardinal Health is designed to provide intermittent pneumatic compression therapy using a combination of sequential, gradient and circumferential compression.

The system is designed to promote venous blood flow and help reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) in appropriate patients.

With Vascular Refill Detection, a compact controller and a wide range of compatible leg sleeves and foot cuffs, the Kendall SCD™ System provides a comprehensive mechanical compression solution for hospitals and surgical environments.

Key Features

  • Sequential Compression: Provides progressive compression through multiple sleeve chambers
  • Gradient Compression: Uses different pressure levels across the sleeve to support venous blood movement
  • Circumferential Compression: Applies compression around the limb to promote effective venous flow
  • Vascular Refill Detection: Measures individual venous refill time and adjusts compression cycle frequency accordingly
  • Sustained Blood Flow: Designed to maintain blood flow velocity and move more blood over time
  • Graphic User Interface: Provides clear visual information during therapy
  • Therapy Meter: Helps healthcare professionals monitor compression therapy
  • Animated Error Code Resolution: Provides visual guidance when operating conditions require attention
  • Adjustable Bed Hook: Allows convenient placement at the patient bedside
  • Battery Operation: Supports improved portability and patient movement
  • IPX3 Rating: Provides specified protection against water ingress
  • Multiple Sleeve Options: Compatible with Comfort, Express, Tear-Away and foot cuff configurations

Sequential and Gradient Compression

The Kendall SCD™ System combines sequential and gradient compression to promote venous blood flow through the lower extremities.

Different chambers within the compression sleeve inflate in a controlled sequence to help move blood from the distal portion of the limb toward the proximal circulation.

The gradient pressure pattern is designed to maximise femoral blood flow velocity, promote unidirectional blood flow and reduce the risk of distal blood trapping.

Circumferential Compression

The Kendall SCD™ System also provides circumferential compression around the limb.

According to the manufacturer, this compression pattern helps:

  • Increase fibrinolytic activity
  • Rapidly empty the femoral veins
  • Support collapse of venous valve cusps during compression

Vascular Refill Detection

A key feature of the Kendall SCD™ System is Vascular Refill Detection (VRD).

VRD measures the time required for the patient’s veins to refill with blood after compression.

The system then uses the patient’s individual venous refill time to determine the frequency of subsequent compression cycles.

Venous refill time is typically measured within a range of approximately 20 to 60 seconds and is automatically recalculated every 30 minutes.

Customised Compression Therapy

Because venous refill time can vary between patients, Vascular Refill Detection allows the Kendall SCD™ System to customise compression timing instead of relying only on a fixed compression interval.

This helps provide compression therapy according to the patient’s individual venous refill characteristics.

Clinical Performance

Clinical evidence presented by Cardinal Health compared the Kendall SCD™ System with other intermittent pneumatic compression systems.

The results reported that the Kendall SCD™ System:

  • Moved more blood per hour
  • Increased the volume of blood moved during each compression cycle
  • Achieved more compression cycles over time

Supporting DVT and PE Risk Reduction

The Kendall SCD™ System is designed to address important factors associated with Virchow’s Triad.

According to the manufacturer, the system helps address:

  • Venous Stasis: By increasing blood flow
  • Coagulation Changes: By stimulating fibrinolytic activity

The manufacturer brochure states that the efficacy of the Kendall SCD™ System is supported by numerous clinical studies across a broad range of surgical specialties.
